Behavioral and mental health counseling is structured clinical work aimed at changing specific patterns — how you interpret situations, how you respond to distress, and what you do when symptoms rise. It is not open-ended venting, and it is not advice. Sessions have a focus, and progress is reviewed.
Because we also provide psychiatric evaluation and medication management, counseling here sits inside one coordinated plan. Patients are not left relaying messages between a therapist and a prescriber who never speak to each other.
Most treatment blends several of these. The mix is chosen around your presentation and revisited as things change.
The first meeting is assessment and orientation: what brought you in, what has already been tried, what you want to be different, and what has been getting in the way. You leave with an initial focus and a sense of the expected pace.
Sessions are typically weekly or biweekly. Each has a topic, and most involve something practiced between visits — tracking a pattern, testing a behavior, or applying a skill in a real situation. The between-session work is where most change actually happens.
We check progress against the goals set at the start. If something is not moving, we change the approach rather than repeating it. When goals are met, we shift to maintenance or step down — ending well is part of good treatment.
Counseling suits people who want to understand what is driving their symptoms and to build durable skills, not only to reduce symptoms in the short term. It works well as a standalone treatment for mild to moderate concerns, and alongside medication for more severe ones — for many conditions, that combination outperforms either treatment alone.
It is also a good fit if you have tried therapy before and it felt unfocused. We will be explicit about what we are working on and why.

Most patients start weekly or biweekly, at roughly 45 to 60 minutes. Frequency usually decreases as things improve. The plan is set at the first visit and revised as needed.
For a focused problem, often eight to sixteen. Complex trauma or long-standing patterns take longer. We review progress against your goals rather than working to a fixed number.
Mainly coordination. Because prescribing happens in the same practice, what surfaces in session informs medication decisions directly, with no messages relayed through you. If you already have a therapist you value, we are glad to work alongside them instead.
Yes, within the standard legal limits — imminent risk of harm to yourself or someone else, and suspected abuse of a child or vulnerable adult. Those exceptions are explained at your first visit, before you disclose anything.
