Positive Pathway and Wellness Center

Positive Pathways and Wellness Center offers in-person, trauma-focused therapy in Hagerstown for children from age 6, teens and adults. Our nurse practitioners are trained in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), two of the most researched treatments for trauma and PTSD.

How trauma can affect daily life

Trauma can follow a single event, such as an accident, assault or sudden loss, or build over time through repeated experiences. Not everyone who goes through something frightening develops lasting symptoms, but many people notice changes such as:

  • Unwanted memories, nightmares or flashbacks
  • Avoiding people, places or conversations that bring up reminders
  • Feeling on edge, easily startled or constantly on guard
  • Trouble sleeping or concentrating
  • Persistent guilt, shame, anger or numbness
  • Feeling disconnected from others or from activities once enjoyed

In children, trauma may show up as behavior changes, regression, repetitive play about the event, school difficulties or new fears.

Our approach to trauma therapy

Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT) for children and teens

TF-CBT is a structured treatment designed for young people ages 6 and up, with a parent or caregiver taking part. It builds coping and emotional regulation skills first, then gradually helps the young person make sense of what happened in a safe, supported way. Caregivers learn skills to support their child and strengthen communication at home.

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for teens and adults

CPT focuses on how a traumatic experience has shaped beliefs about safety, trust, control, self-worth and relationships. Through guided sessions and practice between visits, people learn to identify “stuck points” and develop a more balanced understanding, which often reduces symptoms significantly.

Safety and pacing

Trauma work moves at a pace that feels manageable. Treatment starts with building stability and coping skills, and nobody is asked to share details before they are ready. Sessions are collaborative, and progress is reviewed regularly.

What to expect at the first visit

The first appointment is 60 minutes. The clinician will ask about current symptoms, relevant history and goals, without requiring a detailed account of the trauma. For children, a parent or caregiver attends. The visit ends with a clear treatment plan and session schedule.

Common questions

How long does trauma-focused therapy take?

Both TF-CBT and CPT are structured, time-limited treatments, commonly around 12 to 16 sessions, though the exact number depends on each person’s needs.

Does the trauma have to be recent?

No. Trauma therapy can help whether the experience happened recently or many years ago.
